Fancy Dance

Fancy Dance is a poignant drama that follows Jax, a tough yet vulnerable woman from the Seneca-Cayuga Reservation in Oklahoma, portrayed by Lily Gladstone. The film begins with Jax grappling with the disappearance of her sister, Tawi, who has been missing for two weeks. As Jax takes care of her teenage niece, Roki, she becomes increasingly aware of the challenges they face within their community, particularly regarding the indifference shown by authorities towards missing Indigenous women.

With the upcoming powwow serving as a backdrop, Roki remains hopeful about reuniting with her mother through dance. However, when Jax loses custody of Roki to her white grandfather due to her own troubled past and lack of stability, she decides to take matters into her own hands. In an act of desperation and love, Jax kidnaps Roki to keep her close while searching for Tawi.

As they embark on this journey together, the film explores themes of family bonds, cultural identity, and systemic injustices faced by Indigenous communities. The relationship between Jax and Roki deepens as they navigate their struggles and celebrate their heritage through dance. Ultimately, Fancy Dance highlights the resilience of Native women and the importance of community in confronting personal and societal challenges.
