Beau Is Afraid

Beau Is Afraid follows the life of Beau Wassermann, a middle-aged man plagued by extreme anxiety and paranoia. He is the son of a wealthy businesswoman, Mona Wassermann, who has a controlling and manipulative influence over his life. The story begins with Beau preparing to fly home for his mother’s funeral but facing a series of bizarre and traumatic events that prevent him from reaching her.

After missing his flight due to a series of unfortunate incidents, including theft and violence in his crime-ridden city, Beau learns about his mother’s supposed death through a UPS driver. This revelation sends him into a spiral of panic as he navigates through various surreal encounters, including being taken in by a couple named Grace and Roger, whose daughter Toni harbors resentment towards him.

As Beau attempts to reach his mother’s estate, he becomes embroiled in increasingly strange situations, including an encounter with a traveling theater troupe and an attack by an unstable veteran named Jeeves. Ultimately, he discovers that Mona has been alive all along and has orchestrated much of the chaos surrounding him.

In the climax of the film, Beau confronts his mother in her home, where he learns shocking truths about his family dynamics—including the existence of a monstrous representation of his father. The film culminates in a surreal trial where Beau faces accusations from those around him while grappling with deep-seated guilt and trauma. The narrative concludes ambiguously as Beau accepts his fate amidst overwhelming despair.
