Tiger Stripes

In “Tiger Stripes,” we follow the journey of Zaffan, a bold 12-year-old girl living in Malaysia who is navigating the tumultuous waters of puberty. As the first girl in her religious primary school to start menstruating, Zaffan experiences not only physical changes but also a dramatic shift in her social status among her friends. Once the leader of her group, she becomes a target for bullying, particularly from Farrah, a jealous classmate.

As Zaffan struggles with feelings of shame and isolation, she begins to experience supernatural transformations, turning into a were-tiger when provoked. This transformation symbolizes her internal struggle with identity and societal expectations. The film explores themes of individuality, empowerment, and the challenges faced by young girls as they confront their changing bodies and relationships.

The story culminates in Zaffan embracing her monstrous side after being brutally bullied in the school restroom. This act of defiance leads to chaos within her community, prompting misguided attempts at exorcism by adults who misunderstand her plight. Ultimately, “Tiger Stripes” serves as a parable about self-acceptance and the power that comes from embracing one’s true nature amidst societal pressures.
