The Crime Is Mine

Set in 1935 ParisThe Crime Is Mine follows the story of Madeleine, a struggling actress, and her best friend Pauline, an unemployed lawyer. The two women share a cramped apartment and are behind on their rent when opportunity strikes after a lecherous theatrical producer, Montferrand, attempts to assault Madeleine. After she escapes, Montferrand is found murdered, and despite her innocence, Madeleine confesses to the crime in hopes of gaining fame and fortune.

With Pauline as her defense attorney, they concoct a plan to turn the trial into a media spectacle. As the courtroom drama unfolds, they exploit public sympathy by portraying Madeleine as a victim of self-defense against sexual assault. Their scheme works initially, leading to Madeleine’s acquittal and newfound celebrity status.

However, complications arise when Odette Chaumette, a faded silent film star played by Isabelle Huppert, enters the scene claiming responsibility for Montferrand’s murder. This twist threatens to unravel their carefully constructed lives as Odette demands money to keep quiet about the truth.

The film combines elements of comedy, satire, and feminist themes while exploring issues of justice and female empowerment against the backdrop of 1930s Parisian society.
