In Molli and Max in the Future, set a billion years ahead, we follow the whimsical journey of two characters, Molli and Max, who encounter each other across various planets and dimensions over twelve years. Molli, portrayed by Zosia Mamet, possesses magical abilities, while Max, played by Aristotle Athari, is half-human and half-fish. Their story begins with a chance meeting when their spaceships collide near an asteroid field.
After their initial encounter, Molli invites Max to her ocean world. However, before they can explore their budding friendship further, Molli leaves to join a space cult led by a demigod named Moebius. This decision devastates Max, who later becomes a celebrated figure in robot combat.
As the years pass, Molli and Max’s paths cross again in unexpected ways—each time revealing more about their lives and personal growth. Despite their different lifestyles—Molli’s involvement in a bigamous cult and Max’s fame as a robo-gladiator—they share an undeniable connection that complicates their friendship.
The film explores themes of love, self-discovery, and the challenges of relationships against a backdrop of absurd sci-fi elements like interdimensional travel and cosmic politics. Ultimately, it poses the question of whether Molli and Max will ever confess their true feelings for one another before a looming black hole threatens to consume everything.
