Saltburn

 

Saltburn is a 2023 black comedy psychological thriller directed by Emerald Fennell. The film follows Oliver Quick, a scholarship student at Oxford University who feels out of place among his wealthy peers. He becomes infatuated with Felix Catton, an aristocratic and charismatic classmate.

Plot Summary
After a chance encounter where Oliver helps Felix with a flat tire, the two develop a friendship. Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at his family’s opulent estate, Saltburn. There, Oliver meets Felix’s eccentric family, including his parents Sir James and Lady Elspeth, and his sister Venetia. As the summer unfolds, Oliver’s obsession with Felix deepens, leading him to engage in increasingly manipulative and disturbing behaviors.

The story takes a dark turn when Oliver’s lies about his background are revealed, causing tension between him and Felix. Following a series of tragic events—including Felix’s mysterious death—Oliver continues to manipulate those around him to secure his place within the Catton family. Ultimately, he confesses to orchestrating the chaos that ensues at Saltburn, culminating in him inheriting the estate after Lady Elspeth’s death.

The film explores themes of obsession, class disparity, and moral decay against the backdrop of wealth and privilege.
