Asteroid City

In Asteroid City, a retro-futuristic tale set in the 1950s, the narrative unfolds through a play about a Junior Stargazer convention held in the fictional desert town of Asteroid City. The story primarily follows war photojournalist Augie Steenbeck, who arrives at the convention with his son Woodrow and three daughters. As they navigate their grief over the recent death of Augie’s wife, they encounter various characters, including Midge Campbell, a disillusioned actress.

The plot thickens when a UFO appears during the convention, leading to a military quarantine imposed by General Grif Gibson. The attendees, including gifted teenagers showcasing their inventions, find themselves trapped in this surreal situation. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, romantic connections blossom between Augie and Midge, as well as between their children.

As tensions rise and attempts to communicate with the alien escalate, themes of love, loss, and existential inquiry emerge. The film intersperses scenes from the play with behind-the-scenes footage of its production, creating a metatextual experience that explores the nature of storytelling itself. Ultimately, Asteroid City reflects on human connection and the search for meaning in an unpredictable universe.
