Plot Summary
Set during World War II in 1943, Operation Mincemeat follows Lieutenant Commander Ewen Montagu, a Jewish barrister, who is tasked with devising a plan to mislead Nazi Germany about the Allies’ invasion plans. The Allies intend to invade Sicily, but they need to convince the Germans that the target is Greece instead. To execute this deception, Montagu and his colleague Charles Cholmondeley come up with an audacious scheme involving a corpse.

They obtain the body of Glyndwr Michael, a homeless man who died under tragic circumstances, and create a false identity for him as Major William Martin of the Royal Marines. They fabricate personal items and documents that suggest Martin was carrying sensitive information about the planned invasion of Greece. This includes letters from a fictional fiancée named Pam and other personal effects designed to lend credibility to the ruse.

The body is then placed on a submarine and released off the coast of Spain, where it is discovered by fishermen. The British intelligence team anxiously awaits confirmation that their deception has worked as they navigate various complications, including potential spies and internal tensions among themselves.

As the story unfolds, themes of love and jealousy emerge among Montagu, Cholmondeley, and their secretary Jean Leslie. Ultimately, Operation Mincemeat proves successful when German forces are diverted away from Sicily, allowing for a successful Allied invasion.
