I Want You Back

Plot Overview
In I Want You Back, two thirty-somethings, Peter (Charlie Day) and Emma (Jenny Slate), find themselves heartbroken after being dumped by their respective partners, Anne (Gina Rodriguez) and Noah (Scott Eastwood). Both feeling lost and rejected, they meet by chance in a stairwell while crying over their breakups. They quickly bond over their shared misery and decide to help each other win back their exes.

The Scheme
To achieve this, Peter plans to befriend Noah and sabotage his new relationship with Ginny (Clark Backo), while Emma aims to seduce Anne’s new boyfriend, Logan (Manny Jacinto). As they execute their plan—Emma volunteering for a school play directed by Logan and Peter becoming Noah’s personal trainer—they begin to develop feelings for each other.

Complications Arise
As the story unfolds, both characters face moral dilemmas about their schemes. Emma impresses Logan with her performance in the play but struggles with her feelings for Peter. Meanwhile, Peter realizes that he cannot go through with sabotaging Noah’s engagement to Ginny after witnessing Noah’s heartfelt proposal.

Climactic Moments
At Noah’s wedding, tensions rise when Peter tries to confess his feelings for Emma. However, Emma reveals their scheme in front of everyone, leading to a series of breakups among the group. In the aftermath, both Peter and Emma come to terms with their past relationships and realize they are better off without them.

Resolution
The film concludes on a hopeful note as Peter and Emma find themselves seated across from each other on a plane. When turbulence hits and oxygen masks drop down, Peter instinctively helps Emma put on her mask first before his own. This act solidifies their connection as they smile at each other, suggesting that they have found true companionship in one another.
