Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color (2024)

 

In Godzilla Minus One, set in post-World War II Japan, the story follows Kōichi Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot who survives the war but is haunted by guilt and trauma. After pretending to have mechanical issues with his plane to avoid a suicide mission, he lands on Odo Island, where he encounters Godzilla for the first time. The creature’s attack leads to the deaths of his fellow soldiers, leaving Shikishima branded a coward.

Returning to a devastated Tokyo, Shikishima struggles with survivor’s guilt while forming a bond with Noriko Ōishi and an orphaned baby named Akiko. As Godzilla re-emerges, wreaking havoc across Japan, Shikishima joins forces with a group of citizens determined to stop the monster. They devise a plan involving Freon tanks to trap Godzilla underwater.

The climax sees Shikishima piloting a modified plane loaded with explosives into Godzilla’s mouth in a desperate attempt to destroy the beast. His sacrifice ultimately succeeds as Godzilla is defeated, but not without significant personal loss. The film concludes with Shikishima reuniting with Noriko, who has survived her own ordeal, symbolizing hope amidst destruction.
