In the movie “Turning Red,” Mei Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl living in Toronto, discovers that she transforms into a giant red panda whenever she experiences intense emotions. This transformation has been passed down through generations in her family as a way to protect them. Mei struggles to balance her mother’s expectations with her own desires and friendships, especially her love for the boy band 4*Town. As Mei navigates adolescence and the challenges it brings, she must decide whether to embrace her unique ability or suppress it through a ritual that would separate her from the red panda spirit.
