The plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 revolves around Sonic’s attempts to protect the Master Emerald from Dr. Robotnik and his new ally, Knuckles the Echidna. After being banished to the mushroom planet at the end of the first film, Dr. Robotnik returns to Earth with Knuckles in search of the Master Emerald to gain ultimate power and bring honor to his ancestors. Sonic and Tails team up to find the emerald before Robotnik can get his hands on it. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and obstacles while also dealing with their own personal issues.
The production of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 began in March 2021 in Vancouver and Hawaii. The film was inspired by several video games in the Sonic series, including Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994), and Sonic & Knuckles (1994). Visual effects for the film were provided by Sega’s Marza Animation Planet and Moving Picture Company, among others. Tom Holkenborg returned to compose the score for the film.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released in several international markets on March 30, 2022, and in the United States on April 8 by Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy Group. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, grossing over $405 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing video game film in US history until The Super Mario Bros. Movie surpassed it in 2023. A sequel titled Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled for December 2024, while a spin-off series starring Idris Elba as Knuckles premiered on Paramount+ on April 26, 2024.
