Plot Overview
Set during the end of China’s Cultural Revolution, “Under the Hawthorn Tree” tells the poignant love story between a high school student named Zhang Jing Qiu and a geology student known as Lao San. Jing Qiu is sent to a rural village in Hubei Province for “re-education” through labor, where she encounters Lao San, who comes from a family with military ties.
