Under the Hawthorn Tree

Plot Overview
Set during the end of China’s Cultural Revolution, “Under the Hawthorn Tree” tells the poignant love story between a high school student named Zhang Jing Qiu and a geology student known as Lao San. Jing Qiu is sent to a rural village in Hubei Province for “re-education” through labor, where she encounters Lao San, who comes from a family with military ties. Their relationship blossoms amidst the backdrop of political turmoil and personal struggles.

Character Backgrounds
Jing Qiu’s family has faced significant hardships; her father is a political prisoner, and her mother works menial jobs to support their family. In contrast, Lao San’s mother committed suicide after being labeled a “rightist,” while his father holds a prominent military position. Despite their different backgrounds, they connect deeply over shared experiences of loss and longing.

Development of Love
As their love grows, Jing Qiu grapples with her feelings for Lao San and her responsibilities towards her family. The couple’s relationship faces numerous challenges due to societal expectations and political sensitivities. Despite these obstacles, they promise to wait for each other as they navigate their complicated lives.

Tragic Conclusion
The narrative takes a heartbreaking turn when Lao San is diagnosed with leukemia but chooses to keep his illness secret from Jing Qiu to protect her from pain. Their reunion occurs only when he is on his deathbed, leading to an emotional farewell where Jing Qiu expresses her love one last time. The film concludes with Jing Qiu continuing to honor Lao San by visiting his resting place under the hawthorn tree that symbolizes their enduring love.
