In the 2019 Chinese comedy film Pegasus, directed and written by Han Han, the story revolves around Zhang Chi, portrayed by Shen Teng. Zhang Chi has aspired to be a rally driver since childhood and has achieved significant success in his racing career, winning the prestigious Bayanbulak Rally five times by the age of 32. However, his life takes a turn when he faces suspension due to illegal drag racing and the birth of his son, Zhang Fei. During his five-year suspension, he adheres to the law and supports his family through various means, including running a fried rice stall.
Despite these challenges, Zhang Chi never abandons his dream of returning to racing. He reunites with his former co-driver Sun Yuqiang (Yin Zheng), who also left racing during Zhang’s suspension but decides to return to help him chase his dreams. Meanwhile, Lin Zhendong (Huang Jingyu), a young and talented rally driver who trained in England and idolized Zhang Chi in his youth, rises to fame during Zhang’s absence.
As the story unfolds, Lin Zhendong prepares for a showdown with Zhang Chi at this year’s Bayanbulak Rally before leaving the Chinese racing scene. In a dramatic climax, Zhang Chi wins the race but suffers a catastrophic accident when his car malfunctions after crossing the finish line, leading him off a cliff. The film concludes ambiguously regarding his fate.
