In Detective Pikachu, the story follows Tim Goodman, a former Pokémon trainer who has distanced himself from the world of Pokémon after personal tragedies. When he learns that his father, Harry Goodman, a police detective in Ryme City, has been killed in a car accident, Tim goes to sort through his father’s belongings. There, he encounters an amnesiac Pikachu who wears a deerstalker hat and can speak, but only Tim can understand him.
Tim and Pikachu team up to investigate the circumstances surrounding Harry’s death. They believe that Harry may still be alive despite the police’s claims. Their investigation leads them to various characters and locations within Ryme City, including an underground Pokémon battle arena and encounters with genetically engineered Pokémon.
As they delve deeper into the mystery, they discover that Harry was involved in a case concerning a powerful Pokémon named Mewtwo and a dangerous gas known as “R.” The duo learns that Howard Clifford, the founder of Ryme City, is behind the creation of this gas and has sinister plans involving merging humans with Pokémon.
The climax reveals that Pikachu is actually Harry’s consciousness fused with his Pokémon partner due to an incident during their investigation. Ultimately, Tim reconciles with his father when Mewtwo separates them back into their original forms. The film concludes with Tim deciding to stay in Ryme City to become a detective alongside his father and Pikachu.
