Overview
“The Last King of Scotland” is a historical drama film that explores the tumultuous regime of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin through the eyes of a fictional Scottish doctor, Nicholas Garrigan. The film is based on Giles Foden’s novel and was directed by Kevin Macdonald.

Plot Summary
The story begins in 1970 when Nicholas Garrigan (played by James McAvoy) graduates from medical school in Scotland. Seeking adventure and purpose, he travels to Uganda to work at a missionary clinic run by Dr. David Merrit and his wife, Sarah. Shortly after his arrival, General Idi Amin (portrayed by Forest Whitaker) stages a coup d’état, overthrowing President Milton Obote.

Garrigan’s life takes a dramatic turn when he treats Amin after a car accident. Impressed by Garrigan’s skills and his Scottish heritage, Amin invites him to become his personal physician. Initially captivated by Amin’s charisma and promises of progress for Uganda, Garrigan becomes increasingly entangled in the political machinations of Amin’s regime.

As Garrigan witnesses the growing brutality and paranoia of Amin—who orders the expulsion of Asians from Uganda and engages in widespread repression—he struggles with his moral compass. His relationship with Kay Amin, one of Amin’s wives, complicates matters further as she becomes pregnant with Garrigan’s child.

Tragedy strikes when Kay seeks an abortion due to her fear of Amin discovering her infidelity. After failing to meet her for the procedure, Garrigan discovers her mutilated body, which propels him into a desperate plan to assassinate Amin. However, he is caught in the act and subjected to horrific torture.

In a twist of fate during an airport hostage crisis involving pro-Palestinian hijackers, Garrigan manages to escape with the help of a colleague who sacrifices himself for Garrigan’s freedom. The film concludes with real footage depicting the aftermath of Amin’s rule and his eventual exile until his death in 2003.

Conclusion
“The Last King of Scotland” serves as both a thrilling narrative about power dynamics and a poignant reflection on moral choices amidst tyranny.
