The Figurine

Overview
The Figurine: Araromire is a 2009 Nigerian supernatural suspense thriller directed by Kunle Afolayan. The film explores themes of luck, betrayal, and the consequences of one’s actions through the lens of African folklore.

Plot Summary
The story begins in 1908 with a folktale about the goddess Araromire, who grants seven years of good fortune to those who encounter her figurine, but this is followed by seven years of misfortune. Fast forward to 2001, two friends, Femi (Ramsey Nouah) and Sola (Kunle Afolayan), discover this mystical figurine while serving at a National Youth Service Corps camp in the village of Araromire.

Femi has feelings for Mona (Omoni Oboli), who is also at the camp and eventually becomes Sola’s wife after he proposes to her. The figurine brings them wealth and success for seven years. However, as the seven-year mark approaches, their lives begin to unravel—jobs are lost, relationships deteriorate, and tragedies strike.

Mona learns about the dark side of the figurine’s power and urges Sola to dispose of it. Despite their attempts to rid themselves of it, the figurine keeps returning. In a climactic turn of events, Femi’s jealousy leads him to commit heinous acts against his friends. The film culminates in a confrontation where Femi kills Sola in a fit of rage before facing his own demise.

The movie ends ambiguously with a question posed to the audience: “What do you believe?” This leaves viewers contemplating fate versus free will and the nature of good and evil.
