Plot Overview
“Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan” is a romantic comedy that revolves around the life of Aman Tripathi, an advertiser from a conservative middle-class family in Allahabad. Aman is in a loving relationship with his boyfriend, Kartik Singh, but faces significant challenges when it comes to gaining acceptance from his orthodox family. The story unfolds as Aman’s mother, Sunaina, and father, Shankar, plan to marry him off to a family friend’s daughter named Kusum Nigam.
Conflict and Climax
The film takes a turn when Aman and Kartik attend Aman’s cousin Goggle’s wedding. During the wedding festivities, they share a kiss that shocks their families. Shankar confronts Aman about his sexuality and insists he stay away from Kartik. As tensions rise, Kusum reveals she is in love with another man and proposes that they marry while continuing their affairs in Delhi. Meanwhile, Shankar attempts to “cleanse” Aman of his supposed sins through traditional rituals.
As the story progresses, Goggle helps Kartik win back Aman after attempting suicide due to familial pressures. On the day of Aman’s arranged wedding to Kusum, chaos ensues when Kusum runs away with her lover. In a dramatic twist during the wedding ceremony, Kartik disguises himself as the bride to stop the marriage and professes his love for Aman publicly.
Resolution
The film culminates with the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling decriminalizing homosexuality in India. This pivotal moment leads to reconciliation between Aman and his parents as they come to terms with their son’s identity. Shankar expresses that although he may never fully understand Aman’s love for Kartik, he will not stand in their way anymore. The movie ends on a hopeful note as Aman and Kartik leave for Delhi together.
