Introduction to Xu Wenwu and the Ten Rings
The film begins thousands of years ago with Xu Wenwu, who discovers the mystical Ten Rings, powerful artifacts that grant him immortality and immense power. He uses these rings to build a formidable organization known as the Ten Rings, conquering kingdoms throughout history.
Wenwu’s Family Life
In 1996, Wenwu seeks out Ta Lo, a mythical village, where he meets and falls in love with Ying Li, a guardian of the village. They marry and have two children, Shang-Chi and Xialing. However, tragedy strikes when Ying Li is killed by the Iron Gang, prompting Wenwu to return to his violent ways.
Shang-Chi’s Escape and New Life
After being trained as an assassin by his father, Shang-Chi is sent on a mission to kill the leader of the Iron Gang at just 14 years old. Traumatized by this experience, he flees to San Francisco, adopting the name “Shaun” and living a normal life as a valet with his best friend, Katy.
The Call to Action
Years later, Shang-Chi’s past catches up with him when members of the Ten Rings attack him on a bus to retrieve a pendant given to him by his mother. Fearing for his sister Xialing’s safety due to her matching pendant, he travels to Macau with Katy to find her.
Reunion with Xialing and Capture by Wenwu
In Macau, they find Xialing running an underground fight club. However, their reunion is cut short when Wenwu captures them all at his compound after revealing that he believes Ying Li is still alive in Ta Lo.
Journey to Ta Lo
With help from former actor Trevor Slattery, who had impersonated Wenwu in the past, Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing escape and journey to Ta Lo. There they meet Ying Nan, Ying Li’s sister, who explains that Wenwu is being manipulated by the soul-consuming creature known as the Dweller-in-Darkness, which wants him to break open a seal that protects Ta Lo.
Climactic Battle at Ta Lo
As Wenwu attacks Ta Lo using the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi confronts him. After an intense battle between father and son, Wenwu realizes that Ying Li is truly gone but sacrifices himself to save Shang-Chi from the Dweller-in-Darkness. Together with Katy and Xialing, they defeat this dark entity.
Conclusion: A New Beginning
After returning home to San Francisco, Shang-Chi learns about his new responsibilities as a hero while also discovering more about his family’s legacy. In a mid-credits scene, he meets Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers as they discuss the mysterious signal emitted by the Ten Rings.
