Pad Man

Introduction “Pad Man” is a biographical comedy-drama film that tells the inspiring story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, an Indian social activist who revolutionized menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating low-cost sanitary pads. The film stars Akshay Kumar as Lakshmikant “Lakshmi” Chauhan, Sonam Kapoor as Pari Walia, and Radhika Apte as Gayatri Chauhan.

Plot Summary The story begins with Lakshmi’s marriage to Gayatri. Deeply in love, he becomes concerned when he sees her using unhygienic rags during her menstrual periods. After realizing that sanitary pads are too expensive for their household budget, Lakshmi decides to create a more affordable alternative. His initial attempts at making sanitary pads fail, leading to embarrassment and ridicule from his community.

Undeterred by societal stigma surrounding menstruation, Lakshmi conducts research on materials used in sanitary napkins and learns about cellulose fibers. He works as a manservant to gather information and eventually builds his own pad-making machine after borrowing money. With the help of Pari Walia, an MBA student who recognizes his potential, Lakshmi showcases his invention at an innovation fair in Delhi where it gains recognition.

Despite facing backlash from villagers who view his invention as taboo, Lakshmi perseveres and starts producing low-cost sanitary pads for women in rural areas. His efforts lead to the establishment of small pad-making factories run by local women, providing them with jobs and access to affordable menstrual hygiene products.

The film culminates with Lakshmi receiving national recognition for his work, including the Padma Shri award. He also delivers a speech at the United Nations headquarters advocating for menstrual hygiene awareness. Ultimately, the film concludes with Lakshmi reuniting with Gayatri and achieving success in his mission to improve women’s health.

Conclusion “Pad Man” not only highlights the struggles faced by women regarding menstrual hygiene but also emphasizes themes of determination, innovation, and breaking societal taboos.
