Im Thinking of Ending Things

Overview
“I’m Thinking of Ending Things” is a 2020 surrealist psychological thriller directed by Charlie Kaufman, based on the novel by Iain Reid. The film explores themes of identity, memory, and the complexities of relationships through a disorienting narrative structure.

Plot Summary
The story follows a young woman (played by Jessie Buckley) who is contemplating ending her relationship with her boyfriend, Jake (Jesse Plemons), during a road trip to meet his parents at their remote farmhouse. As they drive through a snowstorm, their conversations reveal awkwardness and tension, with Jake attempting to engage her in discussions about poetry and philosophy.

Upon arriving at the farmhouse, the couple encounters Jake’s eccentric parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis), whose behavior becomes increasingly bizarre as the night progresses. The young woman notices inconsistencies in her own memories and Jake’s stories, leading to feelings of confusion and dread. Throughout the evening, time seems to warp; characters age rapidly or transform before her eyes.

Interspersed with this narrative is footage of an elderly janitor (Guy Boyd) working at a high school, which gradually connects to the main story. As the young woman explores the house, she discovers unsettling truths about herself and Jake. The film culminates in surreal sequences that blur reality and fantasy, ultimately leaving viewers questioning the nature of existence and identity.

In its final moments, the film hints at deeper psychological themes related to regret and self-perception as it concludes with haunting imagery that reflects on life’s transience.
