Igodo

Introduction
“Igodo” is a 1999 Nollywood horror-adventure film that tells the story of the village of Umu-Igodo, which is plagued by mysterious deaths attributed to evil spirits and sorcery. The film unfolds across three time periods: the present (1999), colonial times, and pre-colonial times.

Plot Summary
The movie begins with a woman giving birth to a child named Ihekwumere, who is dedicated to Amadioha, the god of thunder. However, jealousy from villagers leads to tragedy as Ihekwumere’s family is murdered. He escapes into an evil forest where he grows up under the care of a hunter but ultimately meets his demise at the hands of conspirators. Before dying, he curses the village, leading to a series of unexplained deaths.

In response to these calamities, the village king consults the Old Dibia (a traditional healer) who suggests that seven men must venture into the evil forest to retrieve a magical knife capable of cutting down a cursed tree that has grown over Ihekwumere’s grave. The chosen men—Igodo, Agu, Egbunna, Ikenna, Nwoke, Okonta, and Izu—embark on this perilous journey.

As they navigate through various supernatural challenges in the forest—including encounters with cannibals and deceptive spirits—most of them meet tragic ends due to their own mistakes or supernatural forces. Igodo is ultimately the only survivor who returns with the magical knife.

In present-day Umu-Igodo, Igodo recounts his tale to help resolve ongoing issues in the village. The villagers unite to cut down the cursed tree as a means to end their suffering.

Conclusion
“Igodo” serves as both an adventure story and a cautionary tale about jealousy and vengeance within communities. It highlights themes of sacrifice and bravery while showcasing traditional beliefs in Nigerian culture.
