Da 5 Bloods

Overview
Da 5 Bloods is a 2020 American war drama film directed by Spike Lee. The story follows four aging African American Vietnam War veterans—Paul, Otis, Eddie, and Melvin—who return to Vietnam decades after the war. Their mission is twofold: to recover the remains of their fallen squad leader, Norman Earl Holloway (played by Chadwick Boseman), and to retrieve a stash of gold bars they buried during the conflict.

Plot Summary
During the Vietnam War, the group, known as the “Bloods,” discovers a CIA plane crash site containing gold bars intended for local tribes. They decide to take the gold for themselves and bury it for future retrieval. However, their plans are thwarted when Norman is killed in an attack, and subsequent events make it impossible for them to locate the buried treasure.

In present-day Vietnam, a recent landslide reveals part of the plane wreckage, prompting Paul, Otis, Eddie, and Melvin to reunite in Ho Chi Minh City. They are joined by Paul’s estranged son David and a local guide named Vinh. As they journey into the jungle to find both Norman’s remains and the gold, tensions rise among them due to personal conflicts and unresolved traumas from their past.

The group faces numerous challenges: Eddie dies after stepping on a landmine; Paul grapples with PTSD and paranoia; and they encounter hostile forces seeking to claim the gold for themselves. Ultimately, they confront their demons—both internal and external—and must decide how to honor Norman’s memory while addressing their own legacies.

The film culminates in a violent showdown where sacrifices are made. In the end, Paul finds closure with his past through visions of Norman before he is killed. The surviving Bloods distribute their share of the gold for causes that honor their heritage and struggles.
