Chhapaak

Overview
“Chhapaak” is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language biographical drama film directed by Meghna Gulzar, based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. The film stars Deepika Padukone as Malti Agarwal, alongside Vikrant Massey and Madhurjeet Sarghi.

Plot Summary
The story follows Malti Agarwal, a young woman who becomes a victim of an acid attack in April 2005 while shopping in New Delhi. The attack is orchestrated by Basheer “Babbu” Khan, a family friend motivated by jealousy. Following the assault, Malti undergoes numerous surgeries to reconstruct her severely damaged face.

As she navigates the aftermath of the attack, including her physical and emotional recovery, Malti seeks justice against her attackers. With the help of her lawyer Archana Bajaj and activist Amol Dwivedi, she fights for legal reforms to ban the sale of acid in India. Despite facing numerous challenges in court due to inadequate laws regarding acid attacks, she perseveres and eventually sees some success when the court sentences Babbu to ten years in prison.

The film also highlights Malti’s journey as she becomes a prominent advocate for acid attack survivors and raises awareness about their plight. However, it concludes on a somber note, revealing that despite new regulations on acid sales, such attacks continue to occur frequently.

Conclusion
“Chhapaak” serves not only as a personal story of resilience but also as a broader commentary on societal issues surrounding violence against women and the need for legal reform.
