To Have and Have Not

In the summer of 1940, Harry Morgan, a world-weary sport-fishing boat operator in Martinique, is approached to help the French Resistance by smuggling people onto the island. Initially reluctant to get involved in politics, Harry eventually agrees to transport Resistance members Paul de Bursac and his wife Hélène. Alongside this, a romance blossoms between Harry and a young American wanderer named Marie (“Slim”) Browning. As their relationship develops, Harry ends up using most of the money he earns from smuggling to buy Slim a ticket back home to America. However, Slim decides to stay with Harry. The story unfolds with elements of romance, adventure, political intrigue, and moral dilemmas as Harry navigates through dangerous situations involving the police and his involvement with the Resistance.
