  • Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce): A career-focused and strait-laced sergeant who is determined to make a name for himself in the LAPD and live up to his father’s legacy. He is initially seen as cold and distant but gradually reveals his own moral compass.

  • Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey): A fame-seeking narcotics sergeant who collaborates with tabloid journalist Sid Hudgens to perform high-profile celebrity arrests. He is motivated by his desire to maintain his celebrity status and struggles with his own sense of morality throughout the film.
