Incendies: Brief Movie Story

Overview

“Incendies” is a Canadian drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve, adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s play. The story revolves around Canadian twins, Jeanne and Simon Marwan, who embark on a journey to their mother Nawal’s native country in the Levant after her death. They aim to uncover her hidden past and fulfill her last wishes.

Plot Summary

After their mother Nawal passes away, Jeanne and Simon learn that she has left behind two letters: one for their father, whom they believed was dead, and another for a brother they never knew existed. Their mother’s will stipulates that she will not receive a proper burial until these letters are delivered.

As the twins travel to an unnamed Middle Eastern country (heavily influenced by the Lebanese Civil War), flashbacks reveal Nawal’s tumultuous life. She comes from a Christian Arab family and falls in love with a Palestinian refugee named Wahab. After her lover is murdered by her family in an honor killing, Nawal gives birth to a son and is forced to give him up for adoption.

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of civil war, showcasing Nawal’s struggles as she becomes involved in the conflict while searching for her son. Eventually, she is imprisoned and subjected to horrific treatment, resulting in the birth of twins—Jeanne and Simon.

The twins eventually discover that their brother is actually their father, who has been transformed into a torturer during the war. This shocking revelation leads them to confront the complexities of their family’s history and the cycle of violence that has plagued them.

In delivering the letters to their brother/father, they hope to find closure for both themselves and Nawal. The film concludes with Nawal finally receiving a gravestone after her children fulfill her wishes.

Conclusion
“Incendies” explores themes of identity, trauma, and the impact of war on personal lives while highlighting the interconnectedness of familial relationships amidst conflict.
