Locked Doors: Brief Movie Story

Plot Summary

In the 1925 silent romantic drama film Locked Doors, directed by William C. deMille, the story revolves around Mary Reid Carter, played by Betty Compson, who is married to an older architect named Norman Carter (Robert Edeson). While she respects her husband, she does not love him. During a visit to a mountain lodge with friends, Mary meets and falls in love with John Talbot (Theodore von Eltz), who is also an architect working under Norman.

As their romance intensifies, they must hide their feelings from Norman and his sister Laura (Kathlyn Williams). When Norman discovers their affair, he decides to send John away to work on a project in Italy. In a dramatic turn of events, a fire breaks out in their home while John visits Mary to say goodbye. Unable to escape without compromising Mary’s reputation, they choose to stay together in her bedroom.

Norman arrives just in time to rescue Mary but finds her with John. Ultimately, realizing that he cannot keep Mary’s love for himself, Norman offers to arrange for her divorce while John is away so that they can be happy together.
