The story begins with Barfi meeting Shruti Ghosh, a beautiful and educated girl who arrives in Darjeeling. Despite being engaged to another man, Shruti finds herself drawn to Barfi. However, societal pressures and her mother’s disapproval lead her to marry Ranjeet Sengupta instead, leaving Barfi heartbroken.

As the narrative unfolds, Barfi’s father falls ill, prompting him to seek money for his treatment. In a desperate attempt to raise funds, he contemplates kidnapping Jhilmil Chatterjee, an autistic childhood friend who comes from a wealthy family. However, upon discovering that Jhilmil has already been kidnapped by others, he rescues her instead.

Time Jump and Reunion

The story jumps six years ahead to 1978 when Barfi and Shruti unexpectedly reunite in Kolkata. Shruti is unhappy in her marriage and rekindles her friendship with Barfi. Meanwhile, Jhilmil becomes jealous of their relationship and goes missing. This leads to complications involving police investigations where Inspector Sudhanshu Dutta becomes involved.

As the plot thickens with misunderstandings and false accusations against Barfi regarding Jhilmil’s disappearance, it is revealed that both kidnappings were orchestrated by Jhilmil’s father for financial gain. Ultimately, Barfi finds Jhilmil alive after believing she was dead.

Conclusion

In the end, Barfi marries Jhilmil while Shruti reflects on her lost chance with him. The film concludes with a poignant scene where an elderly Barfi lies gravely ill in a hospital bed alongside Jhilmil as they share their final moments together.
