Wings of Desire

Overview
Wings of Desire (German: Der Himmel über Berlin) is a 1987 romantic fantasy film directed by Wim Wenders. The story unfolds in a divided Berlin, where invisible angels observe and comfort the human inhabitants.

Plot Summary
The film follows two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, who roam the streets of Berlin, listening to the thoughts and emotions of its residents. They witness the loneliness and struggles of people, including a pregnant woman in an ambulance and a young prostitute. Among those they observe is Marion, a lonely trapeze artist who performs with the Circus Alekan.

As Damiel becomes increasingly enamored with Marion, he yearns for human experiences—sensation, love, and mortality. Inspired by his desire to connect with her on a deeper level, Damiel decides to renounce his angelic existence and become human. He experiences life for the first time: tasting food, feeling pain, and ultimately discovering love.

In contrast to Damiel’s choice, Cassiel remains an observer, grappling with feelings of despair as he witnesses human suffering without being able to intervene. The film culminates in Damiel meeting Marion at a concert where their connection deepens. As he embraces his new humanity, he learns that living fully means embracing both joy and sorrow.

Conclusion
Wings of Desire explores themes of love, desire, and the beauty of human experience through the lens of angels who long for what they cannot have. It serves as a poignant meditation on existence and connection in a post-war Berlin marked by division.
