Madame Web

Madame Web is a 2024 superhero film directed by S.J Clarkson, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The story follows Cassandra “Cassie” Webb, played by Dakota Johnson, a New York City paramedic who gains the ability to see into the future after a near-death experience. Cassie uses her powers to save three teenage girls from being killed by Ezekiel Sims, played by Tahar Rahim, who believes the girls will eventually kill him due to similar visions he has. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the performances and others finding fault with the plot and editing.

The movie’s plot was criticized for its confusion and lack of coherence. Many reviewers noted that characters’ decisions seemed to be made solely to move the plot forward rather than making sense within the context of their motivations. The villain, Ezekiel Sims, was also criticized for being forgettable and underdeveloped.

Despite these criticisms, some reviewers found enjoyment in the film’s all-star cast and their interactions. Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Sydney Sweeney were praised for their chemistry with Johnson as they worked together to uncover their pasts and futures while evading Sims.

The dialogue in Madame Web was also criticized for feeling forced and awkward at times. One particularly jarring example was during a heartfelt scene where Johnson’s lines and delivery were deemed inappropriate for the moment.

Despite its flaws, Madame Web did leave room for a sequel which could potentially explore more of the girls’ origins and development into superheroes.
