In 1858 Texas, Django, a slave separated from his wife Broomhilda, is encountered by Dr. King Schultz, a German bounty hunter seeking the Brittle brothers. After Schultz kills one of the Speck brothers and offers Django freedom for help, they track down and eliminate the Brittles. Schultz then trains Django as a bounty hunter, leading them to Calvin J. Candie’s plantation in Mississippi where Broomhilda is held. They devise a plan to buy her under false pretenses but are betrayed by Candie, resulting in a violent confrontation where Schultz is killed, and Django seeks revenge by eliminating Candie and his associates to rescue Broomhilda.
