As children, Ivan and Marichka share innocent moments while tending to goats in the hills. However, their happiness is shattered when Marichka’s father kills Ivan’s father, deepening the family feud. As they grow older and fall deeply in love, they plan to elope. Before they can execute their plan, Ivan leaves to earn money for their future together.
Tragedy strikes when Marichka drowns while trying to rescue a lost lamb from a river. Her death plunges Ivan into despair. He returns to find her lifeless body and struggles with his grief throughout the film. Despite marrying another woman named Palahna (Tatyana Bestayeva), he remains emotionally distant due to his unresolved feelings for Marichka.
Palahna becomes frustrated with Ivan’s inability to consummate their marriage and seeks solace in an affair with Yurko (Spartak Bagashvili), a local folk magician. Meanwhile, Ivan experiences hallucinations and visions of Marichka’s spirit as he grapples with his sorrow.
The film culminates in a surreal sequence where Ivan perceives Marichka’s spirit reaching out to him across a great distance. In this moment of emotional climax, he screams and dies, leading to a traditional Hutsul burial as the community mourns.
