Horses of God: Brief Movie Story

Overview “Horses of God” is a 2012 Moroccan drama film directed by Nabil Ayouch, based on the novel “The Stars of Sidi Moumen” by Mahi Binebine. The film explores the lives of young men from the impoverished neighborhood of Sidi Moumen in Casablanca, who become radicalized and ultimately participate in the 2003 Casablanca bombings.

Plot Summary Horses of God Movie

The story begins in 1994, introducing Yachine (whose real name is Tarek), his older brother Hamid, and their friends Nabil, Fouad, and Khalil. They live in extreme poverty and engage in petty crimes to survive. As they grow up, Hamid becomes involved in drug dealing while Yachine works at a repair shop. The September 11 attacks serve as a turning point for Hamid, who returns from prison after embracing radical Islam.

Yachine accidentally kills his boss while trying to protect Nabil from sexual assault. This incident leads them to seek refuge with Hamid’s radical Islamic friends, where they meet Abou Zoubeir, who recruits them into a terrorist cell. Over time, the group becomes fully indoctrinated into radical beliefs.

In May 2003, just before the planned suicide bombing attack on Casablanca, the boys are taken to experience the wealth of the city—a stark contrast to their own lives. On May 16th, they carry out their mission at the Casa de España restaurant, resulting in numerous deaths including their own.

Themes The film addresses themes such as poverty, machismo, radicalization, and the loss of innocence among young men trapped in a cycle of violence and despair. It portrays how socio-economic conditions can lead individuals towards extremist ideologies.
