Le Diner De Cons

Plot Overview
Le Dîner de Cons (The Dinner Game) is a 1998 French comedy film directed by Francis Veber. The story revolves around Pierre Brochant, a wealthy Parisian publisher who participates in a weekly dinner game with his affluent friends. Each participant must bring along an “idiot”—a person who is oblivious to their own foolishness and whose peculiar hobbies can be ridiculed throughout the evening.

The Setup
Pierre believes he has found the perfect “idiot” in François Pignon, a bumbling employee from the Finance Ministry who has an obsession with creating intricate matchstick models of famous landmarks. Excited about showcasing Pignon at the upcoming dinner, Pierre invites him to his home for a preliminary meeting.

Unexpected Complications
However, on the day of the dinner, Pierre suffers from severe back pain after a golf accident and is unable to attend. As he struggles with his predicament, François arrives at his apartment, eager to help but inadvertently complicating matters further. Throughout the evening, François’s well-meaning but clumsy attempts to assist lead to a series of misunderstandings and disasters.

Climactic Events
As Pierre tries to manage his personal life—his wife Christine is leaving him due to his infidelity—François unwittingly reveals secrets that exacerbate Pierre’s situation. He mistakenly contacts Pierre’s mistress and invites a tax inspector over, putting Pierre’s financial misdeeds at risk of exposure.

Resolution
Despite all the chaos caused by François, there are moments where Pierre begins to reflect on his life choices and relationships. The film culminates in a series of comedic yet poignant revelations about friendship and self-awareness. Ultimately, while François remains oblivious to the havoc he wreaks, Pierre finds himself in deeper trouble than ever before.

In the end, Le Dîner de Cons serves as both a humorous critique of social elitism and an exploration of human folly through its engaging characters and clever dialogue.
