Equals

In a dystopian future, humanity has engineered a society devoid of emotions to prevent the violent impulses that led to a catastrophic war. This emotionless utopia, known as the Collective, promotes equality and collective good, eliminating individuality and romantic relationships. Procreation is conducted through artificial means rather than natural reproduction.

However, an epidemic known as “Switched-on Syndrome” (SOS) begins to emerge, affecting individuals who start to regain their emotions. The disease is not contagious but poses a significant threat to the societal order. Those diagnosed with SOS are categorized into four stages, with severe consequences for those reaching advanced stages, including potential suicide or forced euthanasia.

The story follows Silas, an illustrator working in the Collective, who begins to experience symptoms of SOS. At a health facility dedicated to treating this condition, he meets Jonas, another individual suffering from SOS. Through Jonas, Silas discovers a support group for those affected by the syndrome. During this time, he also realizes that his coworker Nia is secretly experiencing SOS symptoms as well.

As Silas and Nia develop feelings for each other amidst their struggle against societal norms and the looming threat of treatment that would suppress their emotions again, they contemplate escaping to the Peninsula—a land outside the Collective’s control—where they hope to find freedom and authenticity in their love.

The film explores themes of love, individuality versus conformity, and the inherent human desire for emotional connection in a world designed to eliminate such experiences.
