Léon: The Professional is a 1994 action-thriller film directed by Luc Besson. The film stars Jean Reno as Léon, a professional hitman, and Gary Oldman as Norman Stansfield, a corrupt DEA agent. The film also features the film debut of Natalie Portman as Mathilda Lando, a 12-year-old girl who becomes Léon’s protégé after her family is murdered by Stansfield.

Plot Summary

Léon is a hitman working in New York City’s Little Italy neighborhood. He lives a solitary life, but his routine is disrupted when he meets Mathilda, a young girl who lives in the apartment next door. Mathilda’s family is murdered by Stansfield, and she seeks refuge in Léon’s apartment.

Léon initially wants nothing to do with Mathilda, but he eventually agrees to train her in his skills after she begs him to avenge her family’s death. Mathilda develops a crush on Léon, but he does not reciprocate her feelings.

Stansfield becomes obsessed with finding Mathilda, and he sends his men to track her down. Léon and Mathilda are forced to go on the run, and they eventually confront Stansfield in a climactic showdown.

Léon’s Backstory

Léon tells Mathilda about his past, revealing that he became a hitman after his girlfriend was killed by her father. He fled to New York and became a hitman for a mob boss named Tony.

The Ending

Léon and Mathilda are eventually cornered by Stansfield’s men. Léon sacrifices himself to save Mathilda, and he dies after killing Stansfield. Mathilda is left alone, but she is determined to carry on Léon’s legacy.
