In “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” Joel Barish, played by Jim Carrey, discovers that his ex-girlfriend Clementine Kruczynski, portrayed by Kate Winslet, has undergone a procedure to erase all memories of him. Heartbroken, Joel decides to undergo the same memory erasure procedure at Lacuna, a firm in New York City. As the memories are being erased from Joel’s brain while he sleeps, he revisits his past with Clementine starting from their last fight and moving towards happier memories. However, as he delves deeper into his memories, he realizes that he doesn’t want to forget her.
Joel’s mental projection of Clementine within his memories advises him to hide her in memories where she doesn’t belong, causing a halt in the erasure process. Despite this pause, the procedure is restarted by Lacuna’s boss. Joel reaches his final memory of Clementine - the day they first met on a beach in Montauk. In this moment as the memory fades away, Clementine tells Joel to meet her in Montauk.
After waking up with his memories of Clementine erased, Joel impulsively heads to Montauk and coincidentally meets Clementine on a train ride. They are drawn back together and decide to give their relationship another chance after listening to their Lacuna records which reveal bitter memories they had forgotten.
